On leaving a snow-covered GRAND FALLS-WINDSOR via PRL BUS, an enroute bus that makes daily crossings along the TCH in NFLD(St John’s to Port Aux Basque), I stopped off at the DEER LAKE AIRPORT.
The Air Canada flight to Halifax arrived in the ROBERT STANDFIELD INTERNTATIONAL AIRPORT around 11pm and as I retrieved my suitcase from the baggage caracols, I stepped out into an area of the airport where the homeless seemed to be surfacing, lurking and lying in what appeared to be dirty areas of the arrival terminal.
A dark mood permeated my person; fatigue, and utter exhaustion presented itself and I wisely found a chair directly across from a LARGE UNIFORMED SECURITY GUARD, who was launched on the other side of closed double pained glass doors,,NO ENTRY). I knew that he could see me(or was he sleeping)??
All I could think, as this dark mood suffused my inert body was”WHY AM I DOING THIS…THIS IS UTTER MADNESS…IT IS CRAZY!”, then … a professional navy blue suited woman (ADMINISTRATION ?not A STEWARDESS, I thought) walked through the automatically opening glass doors, waving a cheery goodnight to the security guard, who seemed utterly disarmed & charmed by her….HE was suddenly wide-eyed awake!
“Yes, let me show you where you could spend the night, she calmly answered, I know a SAFE, actually, QUITE a LOVELY PLACE …it’s in the Observation Tower and the chairs are extremely comfortable..and what are you doing again, you are blogging a CROSS CANADA TRIP.?..well now…”
and 1 1/2 hours later. she was giving me her e-mail address and I was sitting back, saying goodbye, and we were both grateful for this unexpected visit.
