CAPE ST. MARY’S ECOLOGICAL RESERVE known as “the cape,” conveys the absolute & stark beauty of raging waves assaulting the cliffs that make the mating habits of the Northern Gannet, also known as “The Rock Bird”, so visible.
It is one of Newfoundland’s major seabird colonies, where multitudes(I am not being statistical) of Northern Gannet, Black legged kittiwakes, , Cormorants, are so so present in the breeding season.
What makes this spectacular is their visibility from 100 metres away on land(via foot paths)or from the sea. How wonderful to observe their courtship, nesting and feeding behavior and interactions and their delicate flying manuevers.
On a more figurative note, I have been partial to poultry jokes; However there is a two fold sentiment about BIRDS CITED by the character of Atticus (To Kill a Mockingbird), when he made a comment about the judge’s expression with the “off-putting” testimony of Mr. Ewell, in the trial of Tom Robinson, accused of Ms Mayella Ewell’s rape.
Atticus (the lawyer defending , Tom Robinson)said of the Judge’s expression “he looked like he was witnessing a 3 legged chicken that had just hatched a square egg.” Yes Yes.
When Harper Lee so well tells her own autobiography, with it’s so well woven stories, one can not also help but realize from her figurative ploy, the truth of what is metaphorically said. Atticus says that one should not kill a Mockingbird, as it absolutely harms no 0ne, but one should revere and revel in it’s song.
BACK TO BASICS: IT IS SPRING AND MANY MORE MULTITUDES OF BIRDS WILL BE BACK ON “THE CAPE”.
Have a good March 8th, 2012. There is an INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S CONFERENCE IN GF-W that I am attending today. It is held every year, here, and it is quite an empowering day, full of positive stuff.
