THE WORD INTEGRITY, AN ADHERING TO A CODE OF ETHICS, AS IN HONESTY, WAS INTERPRETED BY A fellow Newfoundlander friend of mine/ He told a story. This story-teller begins his tale by citing that his niece, Kelly , along with her husband and 2 children from the mainland, had come to Twillingate area in off-season, yet they were still taken out in a boat, and still , although unable to site whales, were able to witness a gigantic iceberg. Thrilled with this adventure, they decided to stay an extra day.
Kelly asked the skipper, if there was a B&B open at this time of year. He pulled out his cell phone started pushing out the numbers, saying “well we could open one up for ya.” He handed her the phone and she asked the proprietor who answered after 10 rings, if their family could also have breakfast at the establishment. She was told that they could have anything that they wanted, but that they had to order , put in their request on the phone, right then and there.
They were all starving, the kids called out “pancakes, please!!! bacon, eggs, cod, toast, ham. cereal.”the list went on and on. THERE WAS A CHUCKLING RESPONSE AT THE END OF THE LINE.”YA AR AL’ GOING TO DRIVE ME Drove!!!!!~!”
When they disembarked from the vessel at the main dock , the skipper navigated them to the B&B. Kelly’s husband suddenly exclaimed “I do not have any cash, and you people do not have a credit card machine!!”
Mr. Fudge, the owner , casually said …”well just send me a cheque in the mail. Here is my address.”
THIS NEWFOUNDLANDER, JUST EXPECTED THAT KELLY ‘S FAMILY WOULD PAY UP, EVENTIALLY.
WHAT A WORLD WE WOULD HAVE IF THE CREDO WAS SIM;PLY…THAT ‘one expects to be believed!?”
The next anecdote, was from a woman who spoke about her approach to honesty. She said that when times were tough, and her family were hungry, she was in the local Sobey’s. Bananas are usually 95c a pound , however that day,(always expensive because of shipping costs across the water)they were a woping 57 cents a pound. She proceeded to pull out a bunch and peel off their skins, placing them in the clear plastic bags provided.
At the check out counter, the cashier said” WHAT’S THIS TO BE WEIGHED????” The woman said.”bananas”.” The cashier exclained”what!!?” The woman said” This is honest, I do not eat the skins, why should I pay for them?!”
Someone else said”It’s easy to be honest when times are easy, People show their true colors when times are tough. Honest people are tough people…”THEY ARE LIKE TEA BAGS; …..THEIR TRUE FLAVOR COMES OUT WHEN PUT IN HOT WATER!”
Just a slice of the pie. It tastes pretty good, when eaten in Newfoundland.
Have a good February 24th, 2012.
